If you follow me on Instagram, you know I’ve been in a rearranging mood. The headline news: I finally bought a desk. Shocking, I know… a person who works from home daily, desk-less until now. For years I made the dining table my workspace during the week. Briefly, there was a flimsy Ikea number in my bedroom (quickly abandoned because, to me, bedrooms are sanctuaries, not offices). My living room doesn’t make it easy either, with walls interrupted by windows and doorways, it’s always a frustrating puzzle to arrange my furniture.
But here we are: a real desk at last. I’m writing from it now, sunlight spilling through the open windows, magnolias waving outside, jazz humming in the background amongst the street buzz, and a soft breeze floating in. I worked here Friday and felt like a new person. And writing this Substack from it? I could cry. I love desk! One humble piece of furniture can shift an entire life. Naturally, the great rearrange led me down the rabbit hole of Pinterest for inspiration.
Who, on screen, has ever made a desk in the middle of a living space work well? Kathleen Kelly in You’ve Got Mail, nervously typing to her unknown suitor at her little desk pressed against the wall in her lovely NYC apartment. Or Erica Barry in Something’s Gotta Give, crafting her play in that sunlit bedroom with the ocean just beyond (a bedroom office I’d happily endorse). Frances penning from her antique-filled writing room in her gorgeous Tuscan villa, in Under the Tuscan Sun. I found myself studying how their desks were arranged and styled. Flowers, tchotchkes, messy piles of papers and mail, photographs, the lamps, real house phones! I’m the kind of person who pauses a movie to analyze the bookcase in the background or the clutter on a counter. Sometimes I watch films purely for the houses alone.
So this saga of living room rearranging sparked a new Substack idea I know you’ll appreciate: a list of (what I believe to be) the coziest movie homes. The ones I return to again and again for comfort and inspiration. Yes, I love a beautiful estate or a chic modern marvel, but today it’s all about coziness. Homes layered with living, softened by tradition, framed by overflowing gardens and well-loved corners. Places that make you want to curl up with a book, fall asleep to the sound of rain, or linger long over dinner. The kinds of houses that shift with the seasons. Lush greenery in spring, salty seaside summers, foggy autumn mornings, or snowstorms begging for a fire.
And yes, my list is long. I couldn’t help myself. You know how I love a film list. Hopefully it stirs a little home inspiration too. Let’s dive in. And of course, if your favorite cozy home didn’t make the cut, share it in the comments!
Apartments and townhouses with more atmosphere than square footage. Quirky, a bit chic, sometimes messy, sometimes polished. Proof that coziness can thrive even in the middle of the bustle.
Kathleen Kelly’s apartment in You’ve Got Mail
Charming and bookish, filled with floral fabrics, warm lamplight, and stacks of books. It’s so cozy, I would never give it up. I would literally die here.
Elizabeth James’s London townhouse in The Parent Trap
Elegant but never stuffy, tucked into one of London’s dreamiest neighborhoods. Tall windows, moiré wallpaper, and just enough polish to feel like a jewel box.
Mel’s apartment in One Fine Day
Compact, quintessentially New York, with brown shutters and tight little rooms. A single mom’s chic refuge. And yes, I’d also happily curl up here with young George Clooney on a rainy night.
Brontë’s apartment in Green Card
A unicorn New York apartment crowned by its greenhouse and rooftop. It’s bohemian and romantic, the kind of space that feels half-urban oasis, half-secret garden. And hey… I’d probably marry too just to be able to live in this building.
Clarissa’s home in The Hours
A gracious West Village apartment filled with flowers and warm light, reflecting Clarissa’s attempt to build stability and beauty. The open kitchen with hanging pots and the worn wood floods make this one so inviting.
The Woodhouse apartment in Rosemary’s Baby
Is the movie deeply unsettling? Absolutely. But the interiors, soaring ceilings, ornate moldings, and old-world grandeur remain swoon-worthy. Even the fireplace looks temptingly cozy.
The apartment in Miracle on 34th Street
The ultimate New York real estate fantasy. Spacious, classic, with big bay windows and a fireplace. Chic, timeless, and perfectly 90s. Oh, and a handsome neighbor across the way.
Roger & Anita’s homes in 101 Dalmatians
The old handpainted animation of Roger’s shabby London flat, cluttered, musical, and endearingly chaotic, makes my heart flutter. After Anita and the dogs arrive, life expands into a proper Georgian townhouse with so much charm.
Storybook charm at its finest. Ivy climbing the walls, crooked staircases, tea kettles forever whistling. These are the cozy escapes that make you want to pull on a sweater and wander the garden.
The Bennet house in Pride and Prejudice
Longbourn is lively, imperfect, and full of heart. Sunlit rooms with slightly worn edges, bustling with sisters, gossip, and the hum of daily life.
The Wilcox home in Howards End
A Jacobean country house in Surrey with half-timbering, gabled roofs, and gardens that stretch into the meadow beyond. Stately yet so intimate.
Isabel Bigelow’s house in Bewitched
Bright, breezy, and just a little whimsical and playful. I especially adore the cozy back patio... perfect for spellbinding and the likes.
Cotchford Farm in Goodbye Christopher Robin
Set among rolling fields and woodlands, it feels like a house out of a storybook. Sunlight and shadow stretch across creaky floors, carrying both nostalgia and the bittersweet ache of growing up! Le sigh.
Edith Pretty’s farmhouse in The Dig
The quiet Suffolk house looks out across the ancient burial mounds of Sutton Hoo. Modest and pared-back, with clean lines and quiet dignity, it feels rooted in history.
Ella’s cottage in the live action Cinderella
A fairytale country home overflowing with hand-painted wonder walls alive with birds, trees, and delicate floral motifs. Swedish Gustavian meets folk-art chinoiserie, making every room feel like a decorative dreamscape.
The March family home in Little Women
A cluttered, lively New England house where fires crackle, handcrafts scatter, and sisters fill every room with noise and affection. Creative, warm, and alive.
Rosehill Cottage in The Holiday
A quintessential English stone cottage that could have been plucked from a postcard. Inside it’s tiny, sloped ceilings, and fires aglow for the coziest winter.
Mr. & Mrs. Fox’s treehouse in Fantastic Mr. Fox
A hollowed-out tree turned dream home… cozy burrows and rooms carved right into the trunk. Warmly lit and whimsically detailed, it’s equal parts den, country house, and storybook hideaway.
Kiki’s parents’ house in Kiki’s Delivery Service
A little farmhouse steeped in green. Herbs hanging from beams, a wild garden spilling outside. Every corner feels quietly enchanted. I wish it were real!
Howl’s castle in Howl’s Moving Castle
A living, breathing patchwork of turrets, chimneys, and clattering metal legs, the castle stomps across the countryside with a mind of its own. Inside, Howl’s magic transforms rooms and the locations out its front door. It’s fun.
Salt air in the floorboards, windows flung open to the breeze, kitchens full of lemons and sea glass. These are homes that breathe with the tides.
The cottage on the water in Head Above Water
A slightly offbeat little house balanced on the edge of the coast. Weathered wood and sweeping views make it both quirky and serene. And a home I’ve studied so carefully. It heavily inspired my love for collecting natural curiosities.
The inn in Nights in Rodanthe
Perched on stilts at the edge of the Outer Banks, it looks as though the sea itself might swallow this gorgeous weathered blue tower. Moody skies, peeling paint, and ocean spray turn it into a windswept love story.
The Owens’ house in Practical Magic
A witchy Victorian dream with turrets, sprawling porches, and a garden of herbs. It hums with enchantment, like the walls themselves are keeping secrets! One of the most magical homes I can think of… and such good fall vibes.
Erica Barry’s Hamptons house in Something’s Gotta Give
White-on-white interiors, endless French doors, and the hush of waves just beyond. It’s a Hamptons dream that manages to make rich living feel incredibly cozy and embracing.
The family Cornwall home in About Time
Filmed at the Portloe Beach House in Cornwall, it’s a sprawling seaside retreat with glassy views over the cliffs and water. Mismatched furniture, a big yard overlooking the water, and the constant hush of waves.
The cottage in Sense and Sensibility
Barton Cottage is windswept and shabby, perched on the Devon cliffs. One of the those classic English seaside homes you want to claim as your own.
Kiki’s apartment above the bakery in Kiki’s Delivery Service
Small and sweet, perfumed by fresh bread from the bakery below. Is there only a bed and table to dine at? Yes. But with this view? Who needs to furnish! My dream apartment location.
The fantasy homes. The ones that make you want to uproot your life and start over somewhere golden and sun-drenched. Villas, vineyards, wide verandas.
Villa Perlman in Call Me By Your Name
An Italian villa alive with shutters, orchards, and sun-dappled stone walls. It hums with lazy afternoons, books, and the electricity of summer desire.
Nick Parker’s Napa estate in The Parent Trap
Surrounded by rolling vineyards, this Spanish-style home glows with terracotta warmth. It’s elegant yet rooted in California land and style.
Villa Bramasole in Under the Tuscan Sun
An old villa brought back to life with terra-cotta floors, painted wall murals, climbing vines, and golden Tuscan light. Talk about a gorgeous office space!
The vineyard estate in A Good Year
Stone walls bask in the French sun, with vines stretching endlessly in every direction. It’s rustic indulgence at its finest. The kind of place that insists on long lunches and wine before noon.
The Blixen’s farmhouse in Out of Africa
A colonial farmhouse set against the sweep of Kenyan hills, with verandas that open to the endless sky. Inside: worn leather and floral fabric chairs, dark woods, and mosquito-netted beds.
The houses that feel lived in, loved, and layered with memory. Beautiful family homes. A little imperfect, a little cluttered, but always glowing with that timeless warmth that makes you want to curl up on the sofa and stay awhile.
Jane’s house in It’s Complicated
Every corner is drenched in sunlight, with a kitchen and garden that steal the show and family table gatherings that offer nostalgic delight. It’s aspirational but still earthy, warm, and incredibly inviting.
The Clasky home in Spanglish
A classic LA family home that somehow balances traditional perfection with everyday chaos. Layered rooms and a shimmering pool create a house that feels both lived-in and cinematic.
Clare & Henry’s house in The Time Traveler’s Wife
A vintage Chicago beauty with worn wood and moody rooms layered in dark textures and industrial materials. Romantic but a bit tinged with melancholy.
The Hudson Valley home in Stepmom
A stately 19th-century Colonial in New York, with wide porches, stone chimneys, and cozy rooms. Traditional but never stiff, it radiates the kind of timeless warmth that grounds the family’s drama. I especially love seeing it through every season of the year.
The Hillard family house in Mrs. Doubtfire
A cheerful San Francisco Victorian that screams classic. Everything about this house reminds me of growing up in the 90s. It feels like a warm hug.
The Banks family house in Father of the Bride
A picture-perfect Colonial with white clapboard siding, black shutters, and a backyard made for weddings. The quintessential American dream, white picket fence home.
The Thrombey mansion in Knives Out
A sprawling Gothic Revival estate outside Boston, layered with turrets, carved wood, and stained glass. Inside, it’s a maximalist wonderland of cluttered bookshelves, eccentric art, and secret nooks… more puzzle box than family home, but a cozy set against the mystery plot nonetheless.
The house in The Family Stone
A classic, old, white (with black shutters) Connecticut home layered in siblings and… stuff. A warm, slightly unruly nest where love and arguments spill out.
Alice’s Spanish-style house in Home Again
All stucco and terracotta warmth, with archways that frame the California sun. The interiors strike that perfect balance between laid-back and polished… slipcovered sofas, rustic beams, and pops of color.

Absolutely love this list. Makes me miss movies from the 90s
